Wrinkling

(Development of ridges and furrows in a paint film when the paint dries). A rough, crinkled paint surface, which occurs when uncured paint forms a "skin."

Possible causes

  • Paint applied too thickly.
  • Painting during extremely hot weather or cool damp weather, which causes the paint film to dry faster on top than on the bottom.
  • Exposing uncured paint to high humidity levels.
  • Painting over a contaminated surface

Solution

  • Scrape or sand substrate to remove wrinkled layers. If underneath layers are soft, they can be removed by scraping alone. Repaint (avoiding extreme temperature/humidity), applying an even coat of top quality paint.
